  • 30 g cognac
  • 300 g sugar
  • Zest of one orange
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

For the Syrup:

  • 500 g honey
  • 500 g sugar
  • 400 g water

For Garnish:

  • 200 g ground walnuts

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • Add the orange juice, cognac, baking soda, baking powder, orange zest, and cinnamon. Mix well.
    • Gradually add the flour, kneading continuously until a uniform, firm dough forms. Adjust the amount of flour if necessary to achieve the right consistency.
  2. Shape and Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 170-180°C (338-356°F).
    • Shape the dough into oval cookies (melomakarona) and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
    • Prick each cookie three times with a fork.
    • Bake for 15-20 minutes, depending on your oven, until they turn golden brown.
  3. Prepare the Syrup:
    • In a saucepan, combine the honey, sugar, and water.
    • Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Soak the Cookies:
    • Using a slotted spoon, dip the hot melomakarona into the warm syrup for about 30 seconds.
    • Remove them and place them on a serving platter.
  5. Garnish:
    • Sprinkle the cookies with the ground walnuts while they are still warm.

Note: If you prefer, you can skip the syrup and enjoy them as simple cookies—they are delicious either way!
