Ingredients
- 2 sheets of puff pastry
- 12–14 slices of turkey ham
- 12–14 slices of cheese (sandwich cheese)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 10 basil leaves
- 1 ripe tomato, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon tomato paste
- Salt
- Pepper
- Sweet paprika
- 50 g water
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 egg yolk
Instructions for the Sauce
Heat the olive oil in a pan and sauté the onion and garlic for 2–3 minutes.
Add the tomato and tomato paste, stir, and sauté for another 2 minutes.
Season with salt, pepper, sweet paprika, and add the basil and water. Stir and let it simmer for 15–20 minutes until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and allow it to cool.
Instructions for the Filling and Assembly
Lightly grease a baking tray with olive oil. Place one sheet of puff pastry into the tray and gently stretch it with your hands to fit.
Spread the cooled tomato sauce evenly over the pastry, leaving a clean border around the edges.
Layer the turkey ham slices over the sauce, followed by the cheese slices.
Place the second puff pastry sheet on top. If needed, stretch it slightly to fit over the filling. Fold the clean border of the bottom sheet up and seal it with the top sheet.
Beat the egg yolk in a small bowl and brush it over the top pastry. Use a fork to poke small holes in the top sheet, being careful not to puncture the bottom layer.
Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) for 20–25 minutes, or until the pie turns golden brown.
This Ham and Cheese Pie is a savory delight with a crispy, flaky crust and a rich, gooey filling. The hint of basil in the tomato sauce adds an aromatic twist, making it perfect for a family dinner or a comforting snack. Serve it warm and enjoy every cheesy, golden bite!
