Layers of Comfort, Baked to Golden

Creamy mashed potatoes layered with richly seasoned ground meat, crowned with eggs & melting cheese, then baked until golden — a cozy dish made for sharing and satisfying every craving.

Ingredients for the Ground Meat

  • 500 g minced beef or a mix of beef and pork
  • 3 ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Sweet paprika
  • 2-3 sprigs of fresh basil, chopped
  • Olive oil

Ingredients for the Mashed Potatoes

  • 5 medium potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 extra piece of butter for greasing the baking dish
  • 150-200 g milk (as needed)
  • Salt
  • Pepper

For Topping

  • 4 eggs
  • Meltable cheese, as much as desired

Instructions for the Ground Meat

  1. Heat olive oil in a pot and sauté the onion and garlic for 2 minutes.
  2. Add the ground meat and cook for 2-3 minutes until it changes color.
  3. Stir in the tomatoes, salt, and cinnamon stick, then simmer over medium heat for 45 minutes.
  4. Just before turning off the heat, add pepper, paprika, and chopped basil.

Instructions for the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into even-sized pieces.
  2. Place them in a pot, cover with water, add salt, and boil over medium heat until cooked but not overdone.
  3. Drain and transfer to a bowl.
  4. Add butter, pepper, and mash with a potato masher, gradually adding milk while stirring until smooth and creamy.

Assembly

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F).
  2. Grease a baking dish with a piece of butter.
  3. Spread half the mashed potatoes evenly on the bottom, followed by half the ground meat.
  4. Repeat the layers with the remaining mashed potatoes and ground meat.
  5. Using a spoon, make four small wells in the surface and crack an egg into each.
  6. Sprinkle cheese around the eggs and on the whites.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese melts and the eggs are cooked to your liking.
