Espresso Freddo is a popular Greek coffee preparation method that results in a delicious iced coffee. Perhaps, the “national” coffee of the Greek in recent years. Greek invention where it replaces the classic “frappe”. Double espresso mixed with ice in the shaker. Served in a glass with ice. It’s a relatively simple process that emphasizes the use of cold water and a double shot of espresso.
Here’s how to make a great Espresso Freddo:
Ingredients:
2 shots of espresso (about 2 ounces or 60ml)
Cold water
Ice cubes
Sugar (optional)
Milk or cream (optional)
Equipment:
Espresso machine or moka pot
Espresso cups or a small glass
A cocktail shaker or a mixing glass
Ice cubes
Long-handled spoon
Sugar shaker (if adding sugar)
Instructions:
Prepare the Espresso: If you have an espresso machine, brew two shots of espresso. Ensure that you use freshly ground coffee beans.
If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can use a moka pot. Fill the bottom chamber with water and the filter basket with finely ground coffee. Assemble the moka pot and heat it on the stovetop until the coffee starts to fill the upper chamber.
Chill the Espresso: Allow the freshly brewed espresso to cool down to room temperature. You can place it in the refrigerator for faster cooling or make it in advance.
Fill a Glass with Ice: Take a small glass or an espresso cup and fill it with ice cubes. The glass should be about 2/3 full of ice.
Pour the Espresso: Once the espresso has cooled down, pour it over the ice in the glass. The hot espresso will melt some of the ice, diluting it and creating a cold coffee base.
Sweeten (Optional): If you like your coffee sweet, you can add sugar at this point. Use a sugar shaker or simply add sugar to taste. Stir to dissolve.
Stir the Espresso: Use a long-handled spoon to stir the espresso, ice, and sugar (if added). Stir until well mixed.
Optional Milk or Cream: If you prefer a creamier coffee, you can add a small amount of milk or cream to your liking. Stir again to combine.
Shake (Optional): Some people like to shake their Espresso Freddo to create a frothy layer on top. If you choose to do this, transfer the coffee to a cocktail shaker or a mixing glass and shake vigorously.
Serve and Enjoy: Pour your Espresso Freddo back into the glass and serve immediately. You can garnish with a coffee bean or a slice of lemon if desired.
Espresso Freddo is a delightful and refreshing coffee beverage, perfect for a warm day or whenever you crave a chilled coffee. Adjust the sweetness, milk, and strength of coffee to suit your personal taste. Enjoy!
